Most important of all, when you write, mean it; mean what you write, and how you write it as well. Learn about all the factors you can that influence the writing, such as assonance and consonance; learn the best way to use punctuation, the way it's usually used and interpret it. Learn what you use, what those things do, and then use them for your own purpose. Not doing so may result in your poetry being harder to interpret and relate to, and so less attractive.
