If the point of view is the same in the two types of narration, then keep it so. If it changes, then adapt the text accordingly.

In your example, if you wish to rewrite:

`I went there.`

and keep the same point of view, then

`I made my way to that place.`

If instead you wish to change the point of view

`The narrator made his/her way to that place.`
