What is a good "to be" verb substitute in this scenario?

My teacher does not like "to-be verbs" (is, are, etc.) to be used in our sentences. Here is the section in question:
A significant scene in the novel is after...
How can I replace the 'is' in the sentence?

A significant scene in the novel occurs after ...
Or
A significant scene in the novel takes place after ...
Or
A significant scene in the novel follows [the previous reference action] ...
All of these will read the same way; A follows B, A occurs after B, A takes place after B, etc. There are probably many ways to say "First X, then Y".
