The classic approach is to go into the events leading up to the volcano eruption via a 'one year (moth/week/day/hour) earlier' chapter. Make sure that you are not merely _describing_ the events but are enabling the reader to live them with you by means of vivid imagery and realistic dialogue. Make it clear that this section is contributing towards addressing the mystery that you must have planted in the readers mind in Chapter One, i.e. 'why did the volcano erupt?' This will maintain interest.
