What I do is either use a multiple mindmaps about different characters, events and concepts in my book. Or I create a large grid and write something small in each square and maybe have each row or column represent something different, along with the adjacent squares having some sort of similarity or sequential relation as well.

Another thing I did is instead of thinking along the lines of _"provided what happened, what happens next?"_ is to shy away from mere prior events to instead ask _"using all the different hooks that occurred previously, how can I make the most of what I have, to then use it for the best effect and introduce something new to make the story thicker?"_
