**You're forgetting the power of contrast**. What makes a grim or bleak story compelling is the moments of hope, the flashes of humor, the unexpected kindnesses, the oases of calm in the middle of the storms. If it's a tragedy, _those_ are the moments that make the tragic parts heartrending. Absent those, you have only a colorless misery slog teetering on the brink of laughable self-parody.
