Agents typically demand that authors sign over complete control of their royalties to them so that their money comes from the agent rather than from the publisher directly. I know a certain author named Dean Wesley Smith who has spoken a lot about how agents often steal from authors and exploit them. How do authors safeguard against being taken advantage of and ripped off by them, given that they control their royalties? Also, even if the author has no agent and is getting his/her royalties directly from a small publisher, how does the author also ensure that this small publisher is not stealing from them and giving them misleading information about sales of the book?
