David Weber's _The War God's Own_ has some lengthy travel scenes in it which he does quite well. I suspect this as an older book predates his Heinlenesque tendency to include huge _info-dumps_. You can get it free from [Baen's Free Library](http://www.webscription.net/p-451-war-gods-own.aspx). One of the things I like is he shows character growth and learning about each other through relatively minor interactions within the party.
