Question | — |
How do I get beta readers? I wouldn't feel comfortable asking friends and family to read my work and getting their feedback. And I don't have an online platform to ask strangers. What are my other options? (more) |

Should I use made-up words for spells? I put work into making up my own names for spells. However, I feel like they come across as childish when I read over my writing This was also my impression when re-reading Harry Potter. It really took me out of it when adult characters were shouting these childish, made-up words. But then again, so... (more) |

Is there a way to make editing enjoyable? I have my first draft more-or-less complete, and I've been working on editing it now. There is one big problem: I hate editing I find editing to be so draining. I'll open up a chapter to edit and it'll turn into a endless spiral of finding problems with my writing. Badly worded sentences, sentences ... (more) |

Question | — |
Should I avoid "big words" when writing to a younger audience? I was writing the other day and I used the word "ubiquitous". While I don't think "ubiquitous" is the most egregious example of "Using Big Words To Sound Intelligent", and would be perfectly acceptable in most novels, it's just, my novel's demographic would be young teenagers, and I definitely did n... What's a good, multi-platform writing app? (that's not Google docs or Evernote) Sorry if this question has been asked a lot I've been writing for a year now and have used both Google docs and Evernote and found them both to be lacking Google docs: I'm a writer who likes to flit between chapters (I have all my chapters in separate documents), so I find it very cumbersome changi... Is there any difference between these two sentences? (Adverbs) I'm just trying to work around the whole "Adverbs are the devil" rule. Is there any difference between these two lines in regards to writing quality: > He smiled patronisingly at them And > He had a patronising smile on his face Is the second option better than the first one? Should I contact agents/publishers to see if they would be interested in my book before finishing it? I've spent a year writing a book and still probably have a year to go. And all of this work may be wasted, if I don't get published. Should I contact agents/publishers now to garner their interest to see if there is any point in finishing my book? Is that a thing that is done? (more) |

Question | — |
Do I really need a platform to sell my novel? Every piece of writer's advice I see will include something about "building a following" online, so that a publisher will be more likely to pick you up. The problem is, I don't have any idea how to do this! Besides that, I don't really have the time, what with working a full-time job and fitting writ... (more) |

Question | — |
Is there any popular wisdom on the word "seem"? I've just started noticing this word a lot in books. Something about it rubs me the wrong way. For example, I read a book where the following happened > I stumbled to the ground and hit my head. I got back up. The walls and floors seem ed to be moving That struck me as wrong; because since the char... (more) |

Question | — |
Would it be better to write a trilogy over a much longer series? I'm planning out a long series (more than five books as is). It's very optimistic, I know. But I'm just wondering: Would it be better to plan out my series as a trilogy, leaving room to expand if the series is successful? I feel like publishers would regard trilogies as a safer bet than a long-wind... (more) |

Should I use the words "pyromancy" and "necromancy" even if they don't mean what people think they do? If you look up the exact definition for "pyromancy" or "necromancy" they refer to divination using fire and the dead, respectively. However, if you were to ask a layperson what those words mean, they would simply say "fire magic" and "death magic". I'm considering including these magics in my books... (more) |

Is this kind of description not recommended? I think I read somewhere that when writing, you shouldn't describe characters by their characteristics i.e. > The tall man walked across the room Is this true? Maybe I'm misremembering (more) |

Question | — |
Do I need to start off my book by describing the character's "normal world"? I know a lot of books do it (Harry Potter, LOTR, Wheel of Time). It's even part of the "Hero's Journey". However, my book starts with the "inciting incidient" i.e. my main charatcer begins her first day at school. Part of the reason I did this was to subvert the expectation that a book has to start w... How do I become a better writer when I hate reading? I like telling stories, but I don't care so much for reading them. It's not for me. But the number one advice to become a better author is to read a lot. Is there anything else I can do? EDIT: Thanks for all the responses! After reading through them all, I've decided to give audio books another ch... (more) |

Will my book have a better chance at being successful if I include more gender diversity in it? My novel so far only contains female main characters. There are some male characters, but they are few and far between, and only play minor roles. Obviously it's hard to predict if any book is going to be successful. I just feel like if I include more male characters in it, it might be more accessib... (more) |

Should I make up my own names for the days of the week/months I'm writing a light fantasy book. I think it will end up falling into the YA genre. I'm considering making my own names up for the days of the week/months. The book is set in a fantasy world, so it would make sense, but I feel like I'm over complicating things if I do that. It also feels a little pr... (more) |

Am I using too much exposition here? > Lillia usually arrived to school on her own. The other girls from her hometown got a later train more often than not. Changing perspectives For the most part, my story is told from the main character's perspective. However, there are a few scenes that I would like to write that really don't require the main character to be there. I could maybe come up with some ways to place the main character in the scene, but I can only think of some h... (more) |
