Tips on writing author bio As a writer who occasionally gets published in journals and anthologies, I get asked for an "author's bio," usually with a limit of 50 or 100 words. I have a few things that I include but always feel like I could write a better bio. Writing credits, social media links, personal info (like "married an... (more) |

How do you build a story from a world? I have some material for a "world" (more fantasy than sci-fi at this point). I've noodled around with this world off-and-on for ages but have never had a story to put in the world. I have some brief character descriptions for the regional leaders. So, do you have any tips on how to essentially grow ... (more) |

A: Is there a "writer's room" for poetry? It happens rarely but it does happen. I remember a few years ago at a writers' conference (Conversations & Connections, organized by Barrelhouse Press) attending a session where two women who co-wrote a book of poetry discussed what they did. I can't remember their names or the name of the book, unfo... (more) |

A: Where can I find resources about writing "Choose your own adventure"-style books? FYI, there is a gaming company called Choice of Games. They have quite a number of these CYOA games available on the web and for tablets, etc. The really useful part is that they have a tool that is free for authors to use to create their own stories. This may or may not be useful for your purposes, ... (more) |

How to research publishers by subject I'm trying to find a place that not only lists publishers by subject (I know that publishersglobal.com does that) but where I may also find author reviews of the publishers. I am writing a book on a specialized topic and I know the top couple of publishers in that area, but the biggest name has a rep... (more) |

A: Why do most literature magazines take so long (several weeks or months) to respond to submissions despite having only a few hundred subs per month? Keep in mind that many small journals are staffed by volunteers that have to fit their manuscript reviews into their lives along with everything else. Some of the bigger magazines, which get more submissions, have paid staff. You may be comparing apples to oranges in terms of staff size, etc. Also, s... (more) |

A: Finding someone to publish, in the digital age If you are thinking of going the traditional route, then you'll likely need to research getting an agent. Pitching at a conference is one approach, but has its disadvantages (like travel costs). Start googling "agents for X" where X is the type of book you've written. Check magazines that may have ar... A: Using reference books for free handbook Standard disclaimer, I am not a lawyer. Having said that, I think there is a difference between reworking an idea that is pretty well known in the subject area (that is, if you pick up five books on astrology and four of them will at least mention the idea) versus reworking something that one particu... A: Ways to avoid repetition of "filler" words in writing? You mention that you don't think that your problem words can easily be replaced with synonyms. Maybe not "easily" but I think the exercise of trying to substitute synonyms may aid your understanding if why you are using them. For example, look at your use of the word "just" and determine if you mean ... (more) |

A: Runbook template example? I don't have a good example for this either, but my suggestion is that requirements do not go into a Runbook/Operations manual, but that the use cases would make a lot of sense, as you would be tying the steps needed to complete a function to the use case that the user is trying to accomplish from a ... A: Text structure in a fictional diary I would suggest a hybrid approach, keeping in mind the comments by @mbakeranalecta. How about only having certain chapters as diary entries? These would focus on the pieces where your MC has to show his or her opinion, thought processes, etc. The rest of the story could be third person, if you like, ... (more) |

What should be covered in a poetry workshop? I may take on the task of leading a one session (2 hour maximum) workshop on poetry. What would be the most important aspects that should be covered in such a workshop? I would assume that most folks going to a workshop like this would be beginner-intermediate level. (more) |

A: How do I handle teenage sex in books for teenagers? I think it may be okay if the writing about making love is euphemistic -- but don't let the emotions around it be vague. It should be a big event for your characters and that is what is more important than the physical act. (more) |
