Answer A: "The more fleshed out the character is, the more the reader will care about him". Always true?
It boils down to "show, don't tell". You as a writer need to know your characters on a deep level, so you can show the reader who they are through their actions and words. As you already have discovered through your other characters, the effect is often the greatest when you reveal a lot of charact...

Answer A: Can I be a good writer without reading a lot?
You can be a good storyteller. I'm like you. I rarely read for fun, but watched a LOT of movies and played a lot of video games (The first Half-Life game and the first Starcraft game means more to me than any novel I have ever read). I also imagined that I wanted to write books. But what I really w...

Answer A: Can Readers Relate to a Book without Humans?
The podcast 'Writing Excuses' talked about this in an episode (season 3, episode 3) They got a question on how to make aliens convincingly alien in regards to personality and behavior as opposed to biology. Their guest, Eric James Stone, answered the following: "One of the most difficult things to...

Question Good book on writing for children?
I've dabbled with the thought of writing a childrens book. It allows my mind to go all out weird, and I believe they are ususally short enough for me to see the project through. But, as usual, I like reading about stuff more than actually do the stuff. Does anyone have suggestions of books they like...

Question How to tell a story with the least amount of writing?
I love to invent stories and come up with ideas, but I don't have the patience to fill out all the details that is usually a part of a novel. (For those of you familiar with Myers-Briggs or Jungian psychology, I'm talking about the curse of the Intuitives). Said in another way, I want to design stori...

Question Any documentaries or other inspirational movies about creative writing?
Whenever I watch a good movie or documentary about a subject that interests me, it really gets my juices flowing and makes me want to act on my interests (I suddenly realized that this might sound like a request for porn recommendations. It is not.) I'm having a hard time getting anything written at...

Question Correct spelling errors while writing or after you've finished?
With the "write, don't edit" rule in mind, how should one handle mistyping? I usually stop or go back to fix the error as soon as I spot it, but often I feel this breaks the flow of writing. Should one keep going, or stop to correct? I'm afraid I might miss some errors if I don't. And the thought o...

Question Is discovery or outline writing connected to personality type (e.g. MBTI)?
I'm on a bit of a Myers-Briggs spree at the moment (which is dangerous, because it is so easy to read way more into it than you are supposed to). For those of you who are not familiar with it, it is a personality test based on theories by Carl Jung, to determine how you are "wired", and find your pr...

Answer A: Are there some good books about scriptwriting to study?
I think 'Screenplay - the Foundations of Screenwriting' by Syd Field is considered to be "The Bible" in this area. Great book.
