In writing, it is often best to describe the room first, especially if the setting plays a significant role in the scene. A description of the room helps to establish the atmosphere and context of the story, so that the reader can visualize where the action is taking place. After the room has been set, you can shift your focus to the individual, giving a sense of who he or she is in the context of the room. The narrative flow will be smoother as a result of this approach.
