Comment Post #286098 You're asking, in effect, why 18th and 19th century authors didn't write in a late 20th or 21st century style. That just wasn't the style at the time. I don't think there's more to say than that.

Comment Post #285252 This isn't a generalizable approach. It assumes an HTML page and a sufficient level of author control. If the author is using a markup language or converting text into an e-book, the functionality may not be available. It can't be done at all in print.

Science fiction can use garden path sentences to set up a situation that defies the reader's expectations.
