Different ways to emphasize My previous question was "Are paragraph spacing used for emphasis?" and that got me thinking even deeper about emphasizing. I'd like to emphasize to create tension and make the reader continue reading. I'm writing a first page, and to do so (in my opinion) I want the reader to question the last part... (more) |

Are paragraph spaces used for emphasis? I am writing a story and I have these 3 sentences that elaborate on the ending of a first page. This way the reader will continue to read my story. My question is, am I allowed to place paragraph spacing in between these sentences to create spacing? Are there any other stories that do so? Is it cor... (more) |

A: Is it ok to reference something modern to give the reader a better idea of what something looks like if the book is set in the Middle Ages? No, because you'd want your story to be as realistic and logical to the timeline your story is in. If you re-read that sentence, it would sound very weird because cars and swords were not used in the same time. Doing so will confuse the reader. (more) |

A: Should a table of contents be followed by a pagebreak Normally yes, because you wouldn't really want the table of contents and the beginning of a chapter on one page. It looks neater, and easier to manage when you finally print it out. (more) |

A: What would a reader like to know about a character first? As a reader, what would you like to know about a character? Their physical look? Their friends? Their talents? Their thoughts? A: In first person narrative, is it acceptable to end rhetorical questions with a period? A question is a question. The reader may not understand if you don't put the question mark at the end. If you're reading outloud, a sentence with a question mark at the end would curve up, but if it's a period, you would only take a pause. (more) |

A: To read or not to read similar works before write my own? If you feel that it will get harder to write if you read another similar book, then what I'd suggest would be to plan your story, then read similar books, or finish your story then read books to improve your language. Just try not to be stressed. ;) (more) |

A: How to write a reminder on the day before a meeting? "Shall I meet you..." is fine, but you would try and make it sound pleasant. Maybe you are looking forward to it, or maybe you could talk to them about something interesting, then say something like see you tommorow/soon! I would suggest doing it so that it sounds pleasant and polite. (more) |

A: Single author scientific paper, 'we' or 'I'? If it's a single author, use I. A: How can I make dialog sound like that of a six year old? Try to think of that whiny voice you told to shush up ten times a day. Usually, six year olds wouldn't have a good vocabulary, so change the words so that they sound normal, and not that smart. For example, if you would say: "Please pass the dinner rolls", that six year old would either grab it herse... (more) |

A: How to expand my vocabulary? The only thing you can do is to read and write, but reading will help the most. In order to learn something, you need to keep it in your head.
