Question | — |
What is the main publishing format authors should be using today? I've recently begun investigating the publishing process, and what I as an author need to do to get my book read. I'm aware of the self-publishing option, but as I have not studied any options extensively yet, I want to get a good feel for all options before I make a decision. However, the resour... (more) |

Header control moving cursor to end I encountered a bug today while writing an answer. If I write my answer, and then put headers in the middle of it using the heading button, my cursor jumps to the end of my answer. So if I went back right now and put a header at the top of this post, my bar jumps to the end of the question. Not a... (more) |

A: Chapter 1 Problems I haven't read the other answers, but still wanted to weigh in with what I think might be going on, because I know how frustrating it is to have an idea you can't seem to fulfill. I'll break this answer down into the things I think you need to address. Determine the problem You first have to ... (more) |

"the job of the novelist is not to show emotion, it is to create emotion." Wise words. Also good job pointing out how one can't have the payout without the buildup. This does present me with a dilemma however, because the example I included in my OP is in fact the (multi-year) backstory for the main ... (more) |

Question | — |
How to show powerful emotion in a character trying to hide it? This question deals with showing the emotions of characters when those characters are actively trying to hide their emotions. If the emotion is something subtle, like apprehension or annoyance, you can easily convey the emotion through things like body language and the way the character speaks, or th... (more) |

Thanks, Mark. While I've long since figured out how to handle this particular problem, your four points were still greatly helpful in identifying the cause behind certain things I still see in my writing. Especially loose ends - now I have an idea how to cut back on those. (more) |

Per the edit: Yes, that makes sense. I'm following K. M. Wieland's Corruption Character Arc for this story, but it is important to make sure that the character's internal conflict remains until the very end. As long as a shred of the light remains, as long as he hasn't abandoned it completely, there'... (more) |

The tempted. The character who starts in the light, is tempted, falls, and then instead of turning to the light once more, delves deeper into the temptation, the darkness. The reader starts out sympathetic, certainly, but it's that conscious decision to go deeper into the darkness (and subsequent sim... (more) |

A tragedy where everyone dies is completely different from and irrelevant to a dark protagonist. Romeo and Juliet works because we care about the characters. The story ends once they die. But they are not dark or evil. I am discussing dark/evil characters. Not people who die at the end of the story. ... (more) |

This is all built on the assumption that readers read because they wish to witness change. It is my opinion that readers read (especially in today's age) to be entertained. If a character's change is going to leave readers wallowing in the depths of despair, I don't see much reason they would continu... (more) |

Question | — |
Unable to select tags beyond the mid C's I was writing a question today `applause occurs immediately`. When I went to tag it, I was able to select the 'characters' tag just fine. But then I tried to add 'creative-writing', and found that the drop down only extended partway into the C's. Creative-writing wasn't listed. This wouldn't be such ... (more) |

Question | — |
How can I write a dark protagonist for whom there is no hope? In my ongoing effort to weed out every beginner-related problem I might have before I write my novel (what do you mean? I'm not delaying at all), I have now come to a dreaded area: dark protagonists. I once wrote an answer on SE concerning dark protagonists. I said that if you provided hints and ... (more) |

If short stories are something other people are down for, I would be remiss not to mention the contest which I ran for several years. (https://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=35829) It's died off due to lack of writers, but it has some good guidelines and rules we had to hash out over ... (more) |

However, contests could be something which might keep me around more regularly. It would depend on the contest: I don't want to be writing novel-calibre/length works (I want to save that effort for my own novels), but having a place to write short stories just for the sake of keeping in writing-shape... I must admit that I've kind of dropped off of this site. My investment is really in having a place which can come to the rescue when I have a problem I can't solve. I don't sit around and answer questions every day; which is not something I'm very proud of, but is the truth. (more) |

Question | — |
Is there a formula for creating stakes? I thrive off of formulas. I don't do well with brainstorming or figuring out how things in my stories should happen, but I can make a lot of progress if there's a one-size-fits-all formula which can consistently nudge me in the right direction. Over the years, I've developed formulas for almost every... (more) |

Suggestion - Rep Notification, with links I'm sure this is on a list somewhere, but I didn't see a meta discussion about it, so I just wanted to be sure/make it official. I've edited my answer to include your original suggestion. Let me know your thoughts. Also, note that while these guidelines should certainly be discussed, the majority of us are coming from Writing SE, where these guidelines have been used/tested for years. So any discussion about whether or not the... (more) |

@becky82 Your point is a good one. Not only should what is on topic be up front and clear, but I was also too focused on the line between on- and off-topic questions. I've included a bulleted list highlighting what kind of questions we accept, before the other lists. (more) |

I like your layout. With my proposal I was going for an approach which would stave off 'off-topic' questions. If we go with your approach, which starts with what's 'on-topic', then we should start with some better examples. The examples I gave were tailored to border-line instances, and should not be... @becky82 Certainly add your own answer; just keep in mind we're basing it off of the SE help page because it's a good place to start. Probably the best way to go about revisions is to catch me on the official discord. We'll be able to hammer down exactly where and what you're talking about a lot easi... (more) |

A: What topics can I ask about here? Monica asked me to write up a 'what's on topic' text for a future help page, based on the SE on topic page. Below is what I have. Note that I have condensed the guidelines to follow and show more what I feel are the guiding principles. Note also that while I've included examples of what is off-topic,... (more) |

Suggestion - Direct links off of notifications Today I got a notification that I had been mentioned in a comment. However, when I clicked on the notification, I went to the question the comment was on. On SE, you go straight to the comment, and it's even a different background color. It would be great if we had something like that here. Right now... (more) |

Independent, yes, but not necessarily different. I see no reason why the on-topic list over at Writing SE shouldn't apply to us as well. It's certainly a good place to start, since most of us are already familiar with it. We can adapt it in our own help section (once that gets created) and change it ... (more) |

@MarkBaker So... probably our best bet would be to just acknowledge the loophole in the CoC and leave it up to a moderator's call then? That's about the only thing I can think of. Also, we are discussing this over on the Discord if you want to join in. The link is in my profile over on SE. (more) |

... That being said, the only 'loophole' I see here is if the *idea* in question involves a certain party of people, and then someone starts to really unload on that particular party.
