"the job of the novelist is not to show emotion, it is to create emotion." Wise words. Also good job pointing out how one can't have the payout without the buildup. This does present me with a dilemma however, because the example I included in my OP is in fact the (multi-year) backstory for the main ... (more) |

Thanks, Mark. While I've long since figured out how to handle this particular problem, your four points were still greatly helpful in identifying the cause behind certain things I still see in my writing. Especially loose ends - now I have an idea how to cut back on those. (more) |

+1 for the Thanos example. That drove it home quite nicely I think. Something to think about for sure. (more) |

Per the edit: Yes, that makes sense. I'm following K. M. Wieland's Corruption Character Arc for this story, but it is important to make sure that the character's internal conflict remains until the very end. As long as a shred of the light remains, as long as he hasn't abandoned it completely, there'... (more) |

The tempted. The character who starts in the light, is tempted, falls, and then instead of turning to the light once more, delves deeper into the temptation, the darkness. The reader starts out sympathetic, certainly, but it's that conscious decision to go deeper into the darkness (and subsequent sim... (more) |

A tragedy where everyone dies is completely different from and irrelevant to a dark protagonist. Romeo and Juliet works because we care about the characters. The story ends once they die. But they are not dark or evil. I am discussing dark/evil characters. Not people who die at the end of the story. ... (more) |

This is all built on the assumption that readers read because they wish to witness change. It is my opinion that readers read (especially in today's age) to be entertained. If a character's change is going to leave readers wallowing in the depths of despair, I don't see much reason they would continu... (more) |

If short stories are something other people are down for, I would be remiss not to mention the contest which I ran for several years. (https://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=35829) It's died off due to lack of writers, but it has some good guidelines and rules we had to hash out over ... (more) |

However, contests could be something which might keep me around more regularly. It would depend on the contest: I don't want to be writing novel-calibre/length works (I want to save that effort for my own novels), but having a place to write short stories just for the sake of keeping in writing-shape... I must admit that I've kind of dropped off of this site. My investment is really in having a place which can come to the rescue when I have a problem I can't solve. I don't sit around and answer questions every day; which is not something I'm very proud of, but is the truth. (more) |

I've edited my answer to include your original suggestion. Let me know your thoughts. Also, note that while these guidelines should certainly be discussed, the majority of us are coming from Writing SE, where these guidelines have been used/tested for years. So any discussion about whether or not the... (more) |

@becky82 Your point is a good one. Not only should what is on topic be up front and clear, but I was also too focused on the line between on- and off-topic questions. I've included a bulleted list highlighting what kind of questions we accept, before the other lists. (more) |

I like your layout. With my proposal I was going for an approach which would stave off 'off-topic' questions. If we go with your approach, which starts with what's 'on-topic', then we should start with some better examples. The examples I gave were tailored to border-line instances, and should not be... @becky82 Certainly add your own answer; just keep in mind we're basing it off of the SE help page because it's a good place to start. Probably the best way to go about revisions is to catch me on the official discord. We'll be able to hammer down exactly where and what you're talking about a lot easi... (more) |

Independent, yes, but not necessarily different. I see no reason why the on-topic list over at Writing SE shouldn't apply to us as well. It's certainly a good place to start, since most of us are already familiar with it. We can adapt it in our own help section (once that gets created) and change it ... (more) |

@MarkBaker So... probably our best bet would be to just acknowledge the loophole in the CoC and leave it up to a moderator's call then? That's about the only thing I can think of. Also, we are discussing this over on the Discord if you want to join in. The link is in my profile over on SE. (more) |

... That being said, the only 'loophole' I see here is if the *idea* in question involves a certain party of people, and then someone starts to really unload on that particular party. Technically, it's not harassment, since the idea is being addressed (and as long as the 'unloader' keeps it general a... (more) |

@Mark Baker I generally disagree with a lot of what you say, which (I think) you are well aware of. But you have dropped what I think are a few gems, and this is certainly one of them. I agree 100%. Well said. (more) |
