This is approximately what we did. We wrote some JavaScript to do Google Docs-style commenting (select some text, click the "comment" icon that pops up, type). Could the question list show what the most recent activity was (and by whom), rather than the author of the question? I've realized in using this site how dependent I am on the information on the SE question list about who and what bumped a post.
